Eleuthera has always
been a special place since the first
English settlers called the place of
their dreams after the Greek word for
“freedom”. The mentality of the island
still is that you can be who you want to
be, and nowhere do even celebrities get
as little unwanted attention as here.
The people of Eleuthera are very nice
and respectful.
Eleuthera is over
100 miles long, while mostly only 1-2
miles wide. Its population total of
about 11.000 people makes it a small
place, yet the long distances never make
you feel like getting “island fever”.
Numerous attractions along the entire
island give you many things to do if you
tire of enjoying the quiet life on the
estate.
Some people believe
that the Bahamas chain
was the site of the legendary
civilization of Atlantis. It is well
established that during the last ice age
around 12,000 years ago, sea levels
worldwide were about 3-600 feet lower
than they are today, exposing a large
land mass connecting most of the
Bahamian islands which is nowadays under
water and
known as the “Bahamas Bank”.
This ancient land mass stretched
eastward from the Caribbean side of
Glenelg, and what is now Eleuthera was
then the “coastal hill area” of a huge
plain stretching to New Providence and
Andros. Whatever your
beliefs, you can feel close to this
ancient legend while you reside at
Glenelg.
