Originally developed
for a British industrialist in the
1950ies, Glenelg has been a secluded
residence for over 50 years. The name
“Glenelg” was the historical name of the
closest settlement which is nowadays
known as Tarpum Bay
(about 3 miles South).

Glenelg stretches
for about 1 mile across the island “from
sea to sea”. Both the turret on the main
house and the observation tower located
on the highest point of the estate
afford simultaneous views of Atlantic
and Caribbean.

Most of the estate
has been left as virgin jungle, only
pierced by some trails to explore the
natural beauty. More than 200 different
species and sub-species of birds have
been seen by visitors on the estate over
the years. Coconuts and other fruit come
fresh from the garden depending on
seasonal availability.

It is planned to
make Glenelg fully independent of the
public water and electricity grids over
time. The estate is already fully
autonomous in water, with large cisterns
under the houses and at strategic points
along the road. Owners and guests
subscribe to a responsible usage of the
precious rainwater resources. An
independent energy concept based on wind
and sun energy is under development.
